(Ottawa, ON) — The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) congratulates the Council of the Federation (CoF) on their leadership role in identifying innovative and transformative changes for the health care system. The CoF July 2012 report “From Innovation to Action: First Report of the Health Care Innovation Working Group” highlights team based models of care, including the Family Health Team Clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital, Ontario. This interprofessional team is comprised of dental hygienists, physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, chiropractors, psychologists, social workers, dieticians, and pharmacists. Dental hygienists’ focus on oral health promotion and disease prevention fits well with the team focus on client self-management.

June 21st, 2012 (Ottawa): Today is National Aboriginal Day and people across the country are recognizing the contributions of Canada’s Aboriginal populations. National Aboriginal Day also presents an opportunity to acknowledge the many improvements that we must continue to make in ensuring that the country’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit people have the same access to educational and healthcare services that other Canadians may take for granted.

(Ottawa, ON) Today at the Hospice at May Court, the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, announced the three year initiativeThe Way Forward: Moving Towards Community-Integrated Hospice Palliative Care in Canada. Over the course of three years, the federal government will be making a commitment for one-time funding of $3 million to help support the development of new community-integrated palliative care models across Canada. This initiative of the Quality End-of-life Care Coalition of Canada (QELCCC) will be managed by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA).

June is ALS Awareness Month in Canada. Throughout the month, people across Canada raise awareness for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and display the blue cornflower – the emblem of ALS in Canada.

The first Medical Imaging Team Day will be taking place on May 17, 2012 in Ottawa. The day will serve to celebrate the contribution that the imaging team, comprised of physicians, physicists, sonographers and technologists, makes to the Canadian healthcare system. Medical Imaging Team Day will also serve as a platform to inform Canadians about medical imaging procedures and the professions involved in the delivery of these procedures.

Beautiful St. John’s, NL will host the 37th annual conference of the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA), from May 9 to 12. Professionals from across the country will gather in pursuit of leading-edge learning opportunities, which will in turn help them to better serve the people of Canada living with speech, language, hearing and balance disorders. The CASLPA conference is held in conjunction with Speech and Hearing Awareness Month, which is celebrated across the country throughout the month of May. Ottawa, ON — Canada’s Federal Tobacco Control Strategy (FTCS) has resulted in significant reductions in the levels of tobacco use in Canada. This has led to our nation being recognized as a world leader in tobacco control. The Smoking Cessation Quitline is just one of many highly successful programs the federal government has supported to this end. Unfortunately, significant financial cuts are being made to the FTCS.
